The school day is over. The bags are down, the homework can wait for a little while—and there's still time for one more adventure.

If your child loves Star Wars, a lightsaber can turn an ordinary afternoon into an opportunity to play, move, imagine and spend quality time together. You don't need a huge garden or a complicated setup either. With a little creativity, you can create your own Jedi training session right at home.

Here are five easy lightsaber activities for kids that are perfect for after-school fun.

1. Have a Backyard Lightsaber Duel

Sometimes, the simplest idea is the most fun.

Take your kids lightsaber outside and set up a friendly duel. One person can take on the role of the Padawan while the other becomes the Master.

Keep things playful by creating simple rules:

  • No hitting above the shoulders.

  • Focus on controlled movements rather than strength.

  • Take turns attacking and defending.

  • Give each duel a fun name or challenge.

You could even introduce different rounds—first to three points wins, or each player gets three chances to land a controlled strike.

A backyard lightsaber duel is an easy way to get everyone away from their screens while creating a memorable family activity.

2. Create a Jedi Obstacle Course

Turn your garden or a safe open space into a miniature Jedi training ground.

Use everyday objects to create stations around the course. Walk around cones, duck under obstacles, balance along a line or sprint between designated points. At each station, add a lightsaber training challenge.

For example:

Station 1: Practise your Jedi stance.

Station 2: Complete five controlled swings.

Station 3: Defend against an imaginary opponent.

Station 4: Navigate the course while carrying your lightsaber.

Station 5: Finish with a victory pose.

The best part? You can change the course every few days so your young Jedi never knows what their next mission will be.

3. Practise Your Jedi Stance

You don't need to duel to enjoy lightsaber training.

Spend a few minutes learning different stances and movements together. Have your child choose their favourite Star Wars character and try to imagine how that character might stand, move and prepare for battle.

Make it a challenge by taking turns being the instructor.

One person demonstrates a stance while the other copies it. Then switch roles.

This is also a great way to slow things down and focus on controlled movements rather than simply swinging a kids lightsaber as quickly as possible.

4. Turn It Into a Character Challenge

Who would your child be in the Star Wars universe?

Pick a character and create a mini challenge around them.

A young Jedi might need to complete a series of training movements. A brave Padawan could face an imaginary mission. Or your child could invent their own Jedi character complete with a name, lightsaber colour and fighting style.

You can even make this a family competition:

Choose a character → create a fighting style → complete three challenges → strike your best Jedi pose.

It combines imagination, movement and storytelling, and gives kids another reason to pick up their lightsaber after school.

5. Make It a Master vs. Padawan Challenge

Every Padawan needs someone to train with.

Instead of making lightsaber time something your child does alone, join them for a Master vs. Padawan challenge.

Set up a few simple rounds:

Round 1: Best Jedi stance

Round 2: Most creative lightsaber move

Round 3: Fastest obstacle course

Round 4: Best victory pose

Final Round: Friendly lightsaber duel

Keep score...or don't. The goal isn't necessarily to find out who's the better Jedi. It's about having something fun you can do together after a busy school day.

And if you're going to train together, there's one important thing you'll need...

One Lightsaber for the Padawan. One for the Master.

After-school adventures are even better when everyone can join in.

With Jedi Master Sabers, you can choose a Kids Lightsaber for your young Jedi and an Adult Lightsaber for yourself. When you purchase them together, you'll get 25% OFF the adult lightsaber automatically.

So when the school day is done, you can put the homework aside for a moment, step outside and start your own family Jedi training session.

One Padawan. One Master. Two lightsabers. Plenty of memories to make.

I love the idea of turning after-school time into an active adventure instead of more screen time. The obstacle course and character challenges sound especially fun! It reminds me of how space waves also mixes quick reactions with playful challenges. Great ideas for keeping kids entertained!
